When Miss Emeline traveled by stagecoach to the prairie Downtrodden she shook the dust out of her skirts as she disembarked.
Tumbleweeds rolled as she passed Hardwork. The hotel above the saloon offered her a thick bitter drink, porridge for breakfast, and cornbread and cabbage stew for dinner.
“I was parched from my journey,” she said. “The Downtrodden were kind, but weathering the harsh environment leaves them little energy for niceties and entertainment. I was the only visitor they’d had in some time. The capitol Sober is well-ordered. Everyone lives comfortably.”
Miss Emeline shows Doe and Amma, who stayed behind, pictures of the Downtrodden prairie dogs and vultures.
