Everything falls from the sky in Ominous and lands at the feet of the denizens walking by.
“Oh my!” even Miss Emeline Traveler exclaims in surprise.
Airships pilot past the debris maneuvering slowly.
Shooting stars!
Falling meteors!
The denizens practice catapulting rocks from trebuchets.
The sky darkens — total eclipse!
“Will the light ever come back?” the Guide asks.
“Your science was proven wrong. It was replaced,” the Mayor of Ominous says to Miss Emeline.
“Gravity does not always work,” says the Guide.
Explorers, intrigued by the land’s unpredictability come to stay in Ominous.
“I have been to Boredom,” says one. “And I hope that this will be better.”
“I found it terribly unsettling,” says Miss Doe Friend. “Not ever to know what will happen next, and yet, to be sure it will be completely unexpected and certainly bad.”
Trees fall in the forest over the trails.
Whirlpools appear in the middle of swimming holes. Visitors get sucked into underwater caves.
The winged denizens of Ominous fly overhead landing when struck by falling objects or lightening.
Thunderstorms darken the sky covering the sun when it returns. Gusts of wind topple trees and buildings.
No one is safe.
The cloud city Portentous shifts color. The changes mean something.
But what?
Below in their airship the ostracized scientists gather to interpret their findings. They pour over centuries of data. They make notes. They deliver speeches. They write papers.
Meanwhile, the poor denizens of Ominous are likely to be struck and killed by falling rocks.
Visitors to Ominous take airships up to Portentous where it is safer.
"Serene compared to the deadly land below," says Miss Emeline Traveler.
"However," Miss Doe Friend writes her lover Alobar. "I found Portentous unsatisfying. It never delivers what it promises. The cakes and sweets are ordinary. The music crescendos but never resolves. The view from the city looks off into endless lavender skies. The statues and monuments are half-built. I found the denizens enigmatic, very beautiful, but distant."
