A dogged lot: The denizens of Persistence founded their city inside of a desert mountain. The land does not yield to their hands and they must climb mesa stairs to reach their beds at night and in the morning descend to the fields and traverse narrow hillside roads to tend to their fields and carry baskets of grains up to their nests.
The young Persistians accomplish great things in other realms and return to hide their wealth (which any are welcome to) under the rock dragon Resist.
"No leaders. No royalty," says the Guide. “We each pursue our own path of righteousness,” says a Guide.
“They sound independent but in truth each follows the same rituals,” says Miss Emeline Traveler.
Few stay in Persistence. They seek adventures. Yet, enough remain to maintain its roads and fields.
“We believe in a Legendary Being who created our world and comes to us in our dreams. The words of Allomver are etched into the mesa wall and grow deeper with each passing year,” says the Guide.
At the top of the mesa in a bowl shaped cavern a spiral staircase descends down into the darkness of Writerly Persistence where Allomver passes dreams to the Persistant.
"I thought of myself as a Persistian," says the Dreamer. "Until I descended down into its heart."
There's a well at the bottom of the cavern.
"All along the way, we heard, plunking, clanging, weeping or laughing. We walked beside others headed to the well and we walked alone," said Miss Doe Friend. "At the bottom of the well, there is a dragon’s hoard of jewels, an underground spring of vital water, a light that shines in, and a window out to the Valley of Persistence and the River of Reflection."
"The Rock Dragon Revmolla is a wise, funny storyteller," says Miss Traveler. "And they ask to hear the story of how you arrived and love to listen."
"I loved this place and learned a lot," writes Miss Doe Friend to her lover. "For once I didn't mind our long stay (although I miss you dearly). Revmolla spoke to me about my story and advised, 'Do not make it sound too easy.' After our stories, they took us on their backs, took flight, and showed us the realm from the air and then onward to our next destination. I will describe that flight to you in my next letter after I have a chance to dream the words to tell of it."
