Today marks 30 days of blogging The Snow Leopard (1978). I didn't expect to continue to blog my own senses during this project, but, delightfully, while paying closer attention to each day of The Snow Leopard I have become more observant of my own surroundings as well and it's fun to compare and contrast my own senses alongside what is happening on Matthiessen's 1973 journey in the Himalaya.
In most blog entries, I've managed to include an "at home" element. I continue to get up at 5 a.m. every day to work on my novel-in-progress Panthera — here marks 60 days of writing every day including those heretofore elusive Sundays. Some days I do not accomplish much, but show up to the page. I have about a month left to get to complete a draft (a self-imposed goal of Dec. 1). But like Matthiessen, I am plagued with worries about my progress. There is only so much I can do to hurry the porters (muses) over the mountain pass.
I was pleased to discover that Mr. Matthiessen has novel coming out this spring, "In Paradise," which I have added to my to-read list. I've also been enjoying this interview with Matthiessen by Howard Norman, "Peter Matthiessen, The Art of Fiction No. 157," in The Paris Review.
I have obtained a copy of The Cloud Forest. Maybe I will blog it too December 18 through May, but with some leaping over time, not daily entries. But that is, perhaps, too much thinking ahead as is my wont. Onward!
Smoked flesh, a cheered feast — practiced consideration and intense privacy
Mutant carrots and mushed cashews make bright-orange frothy soup
Snow leopard taste: sex, wine, and feasting; dead human flesh and filth
At home: Arctic Fox Endangered Species dark chocolate with pumpkin spice
Snow leopard sight: the Himalayan autumn; "The wind blows snow from pristine points that glisten in the light, and there are magic colors in the clouds that sail across the peaks on high blue journeys."
At home: a golden spear; silver and gold sparkle hats
Snow leopard sound: cheer and clap
At home: creaking ceramics, artificial hips
Snow leopard smell: firesmoke
At home: cooked carrots
Snow leopard touch: a cold wind off Kanjiroba
At home: at five o'clock a cold wind downtown
Snow leopard word of the day: yin-yang - the balance of cosmic principles
Snow leopard quote of the day: "the intense respect of a private soul for the privacy of others"
Snow leopard extra: Tantra - "the practice of mankind's earliest religious intuition: that body, mind, and nature are all one"
At home: INFJ, Obi-Wan Kenobi;
At home: clear skies, bright moon, bright stars
Panthera progress: achievement unlocked, write every day 60 days
What is this? Blogging The Snow Leopard project.

"Deep in a novel, one scarcely knows what may surface next, let alone where it comes from. In abandoning oneself to the free creation of something never beheld on earth, one feels almost delirious with a strange joy." — "Peter Matthiessen, The Art of Fiction No. 157" in The Paris ReviewSnow leopard gratitude: consideration; open and free
"Starting each day is like priming the pump, in my experience; it’s plain hard labor, hunting the right way to express that thought that had seemed so penetrating, even beautiful, before you had to reduce it into words." — "Peter Matthiessen, The Art of Fiction No. 157" in The Paris Review
